It is only days away until Castleford Tigers Foundation’s Learning Disability Super League side take to the field at St James’ Park on Saturday the 9th of July!
Fans attending Magic Weekend in Newcastle will have the privilege of watching and supporting a truly inspirational adapted version of the sport.
LDRL teams last made an appearance during the festival of rugby league back in 2019 at Anfield Stadium and following two years of Covid-19 restrictions, it will be a special moment to see our inspirational Tigers team take to the field.
Cas will be taking part in an exhibition during half-time of the second game on the Saturday at around 5:30pm and we encourage the Fords faithful to get behind them and make it an unforgettable day.
Our LDRL stars have been training hard in anticipation of what will be a memorable occasion and after finishing a recent session down at The Jungle, player Karl Emmett spoke of how much he and the rest of the squad are looking forward to playing in Newcastle.
“There is really big buzz around everyone for it. To have it up in Newcastle this time as well makes it even more exciting.
“We are playing at half-time of the game before Cas in front of all those fans, it will be amazing. I’ll get more nervous the closer it gets to the time, but I am really excited now.”
The Foundation are taking a fantastic number of around 20 players up to the Northeast for the showpiece event with over 230 players in total running out for Super League and Championship clubs across the country.
Michael Yates, who also plays for Cas’ LDRL team, touched on what will be a poignant moment for him and his family when he takes to the hallowed turf of St James’ Park and how it will help the sport grow.
“It was always a lifelong dream for me to play at The Mend-A-Hose Jungle and we did that a few weeks ago which was great. To be going up to Magic Weekend at St James’ Park will be amazing because I never thought I would be doing anything like that.
“My family are coming up to watch as well so that will be special to see them watching me play. It will also expand the game of LDRL in general and show what we can do and what it’s about.
“LDRL is all about bringing people together and it’s available for everyone. No matter who you are, there is always something in rugby league for you.”
