Tigers vs Wolves: Match Preview

The Tigers open their 2021 Betfred Super League campaign against Warrington at Emerald Headingley Stadium!

After 12 hard weeks of pre-season, it all comes down to this: The Tigers’ first competitive runout will be to end the Round 1 fixtures with the eyes of Super League watching what is arguably the highlight of the first weekend of games.

Coming up just short on both occasions last year in slender losses, Cas will be eager to banish the bitter memories of their run-ins with Wire in 2020 and start this season with a statement win against one of the top sides in the competition.

Sunday also marks the first game for the Tigers since Daryl Powell announced he will be leaving the club at the end of the year and his squad will want to start his final campaign at the Tigers with a memorable win.

Powell’s 21-man squad features both new signings Niall Evalds and Jordan Turner, who impressed in their debuts against Hull KR in Adam Milner’s testimonial and both are poised to potentially make their first competitive appearances in Cas colours. Also named in Daryl Powell’s teamsheet are returning familiar faces Liam Watts, Danny Richardson, and Greg Eden who did not feature in the pre-season friendly.

Sunday’s opposition will also be heavily motivated to do right by their coach of course, with Steve Price announcing he will return to Australia after this season, earlier this year, they certainly looked in fine fettle as they comfortably beat out Leigh Centurions 34-12 in pre-season action. The much-anticipated debut of superstar Greg Inglis will have to wait another week, but the Fords will still have their hands full dealing with the Wolves, as their captain Jack Hughes returns, and Blake Austin is fit to play after shaking off a pre-season knock.

A victory, however it comes, in Sunday’s showdown would be the perfect start to the season for Castleford, but there are no guarantees and if last season has taught them anything – Games against Warrington will go right down to the wire!
