Tigers 6 - 64 Rhinos
The Tigers returned to their home for the Round 22 Betfred Super league fixture, as they welcomed rivals Leeds Rhinos for the local derby game.
Castleford Wheldon Road ground was all rebranded and renamed this week to The OneBore Stadium and saw a large crowd of 7861 present for the hosts penultimate home fixture of the season.
The hosts started well and threatened but it was the visitors who looked to open the scoring, but Tigers back line stalled their momentum. Retuning up field the Castleford attack with an opportune kick from Alex Mellor thought they had opened the scoring through Louis Senior but the try was ruled out by the Video Referee.
Returning up field the Rhinos Lachie Miller broke from deep, and Harry Newman opened the scoring with a converted try. Castleford go-forward struggled to find any field position in the first half and the Rhinos kept them pinned deep in their own half.
A few minutes later they added another when Miller gathered a kick to score and increase the lead with another converted try. A try through the middle as the Leeds attack wrestled over to post more points before another break from deep through Andy Ackers saw Brodie Croft finish off another move and pin the Tigers deep again as the Rhinos scored in the corner.
A chance kick wasn’t delay with by the hosts in-goal and the visitors continued to pressure with another converted try.
The half ended with an interception while the Tigers tried to build some possession, but the break free saw another try through Ryan Hall, and the Rhinos led at the break, through six tries and 36-0 posted.
The second half saw the Tigers again on the back foot, and while they tried to find a way through the visitor’s defence, errors crept in as they pressed to get a breakthrough. Another Leeds break caused problems and sent Ash Handley over to score. They returned quickly for another but the Tigers were awarded a penalty from the build up play. Mellor led the Tigers front line but they couldn’t find a way to create opportunity in good-ball.
A further three tries quickly followed for the Rhinos as they improved the margin, but the hosts took credit for continuing to create pressure on the back foot. Hooker Cain Robb worked the ball right and Chris Atkin sent young full back Jenson Windley over wide out as he evaded the clutches of the Rhinos would-be tacklers to score. Atkin added the conversion, but the visitors ran out comfortable winners with 64-6 win
