St.Helens 40 - 0 Tigers

The Tigers gave debut to winger Andy Djeukessi on their trip over to St.Helens in their Round 20 Friday night fixture and looked to follow up their home win over Warrington Wolves.

The hosts started well and held the Tigers deep in their own half and saw the Castleford attack kick from deep in bid to clear their line on several occasions, but the home side attack quickly found gear. Scoring from a breakthrough the middle inside the first five minutes saw them take an early lead with a converted try.

An opportune kick to the in-goal on ten minutes wasn’t dealt with and the Saints attack reacted quicker to cross for another try.

The Tigers tried to find cohesion but couldn’t get into any good deep Saints territory; and found it hard to earn the field position to play.

A penalty to the home side gifted them yardage and found reward out down their right-hand side halfway through the first half, the conversion gifted them more points.

Coming out of back play an error saw the hosts possession reap more rewards on the half hour and another converted try came as they found opening down the right-hand edge.

The Tigers looked to get back in the mix and looked to have found a way back in through Josh Simms, but the Video referee ruled out the opportunity.

The visitors attack did look to start building some momentum off the back of Simm‘s chance and pushed forward. A kick on the last towards the cross play was collected by the Saints back line and raced clear to go the length and score at the end of the half and go in at the break with a convincing 28-0 lead.

Castleford’s defence rallied from the off and stall the home sides ascendancy as the second half got under way with full back Fletcher Rooney holding the back line firm. Djeukessi stopped a try scoring chance in a proud debutant display, but the hosts defence kept a strangle hold on the visitors’ opportunities and held them firmly back into their own half with final play kicks.

The Saints attack continued to press but the Tigers scrambled well and held the home side out till the seventieth minute when a well worked break from the Saints go-forward saw them go in at the corner for a converted try.

A breakthrough the middle with quick feet saw them quickly respond for another converted try and take their margin to forty points, which they held on to the end.
