It will serve as the Fords’ first pre-season fixture ahead of the 2022 Betfred Super League season, and it will be the first time that the Tigers men’s team will have visited the LNER Community Stadium since its opening in May 2021.

Back in 2020, the Tigers and the Knights were originally scheduled for a last sixteen match at Bootham Crescent in the Challenge Cup, but this was changed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Now in their new home at the LNER Community Stadium, the capacity limits have now been lifted allowing up to 8,510 supporters in the stands, so a bumper crowd can be expected when Castleford travel to take on York.

The match on Sunday, 16th January 2022 could give the Fords faithful their first looks new recruits such as: Jake Mamo, Mahe Fonua, George Lawler, and Alex Sutcliffe!

Much like Castleford, York has made a number of changes in the off-season which has seen them bring in eleven new players such as Pauli, Jamie Ellis, Jordan Thompson, James Glover, and Liam Harris.

Knights Head Coach James Fords is a Castleford-native which included a spell early in his playing career with the Tigers, and their club captain Chris Clarkson was part of the Fords’ squad in 2019 which secured a play-off finish and an eliminator victory over Warrington.

Speaking about his first match as Head Coach of Castleford Tigers against York City Knights, Lee Radford said: “York City Knights are a great club with an impressive new stadium, they have good people working there with Jon Flatman as Chairman and James Ford as coach, and I’m looking forward to visiting the LNER Community Stadium with our Tigers team.

“It will provide us a terrific challenge for our first fixture of the 2022 pre-season, Fordy is a top coach and I like the way his side plays rugby, so to go to their home and take them on should be exciting for both us and both sets of supporters.

“I hope plenty of Cas fans travel over to support, and I can’t wait to see them in the away end.”

York City Knights Chairman Jon Flatman added: "They will be the first Super League opponents York fans will have the chance to see in person at the LNER Community Stadium and, hopefully, with a big home and away following, it will be an afternoon to remember ahead of the season."

“I hope plenty of Cas fans travel over to support, and I can’t wait to see them in the away end.”
