Shenton kicks off testimonial against Toronto

Shenton has been an outstanding servant for the Tigers and holds the club record for most Super League appearances during a 15-year career that has seen him play over 300 games for Castleford, crossing for over 100 tries.

The ex-England international, who also had a two-year spell at St Helens, captained the Tigers to the 2017 League Leaders’ Shield as well as in the 2014 Challenge Cup Final and the 2017 Grand Final.

A graduate of the club’s academy, he made his first team debut for the Tigers against Wigan in 2004 and was part of the Castleford sides relegated from the top flight in 2005 and 2007 before playing an integral role in the resurgence of the team on their return to Super League and particularly under head coach Daryl Powell in recent years.

In recognition of his contribution to the club, Shenton has been granted a testimonial in 2020 that will include a fixture against Toronto Wolfpack at the Mend-A-Hose Jungle on Sunday, 19th January (2pm), as well as a series of events due to be confirmed in the near future that will make up his testimonial calendar.

Speaking to castlefordtigers.com, Shenton said: “I wanted to start by saying thank you to everybody who’s helped out so far with my testimonial. It’s only being released now but there’s been a lot of hard work going on behind the scenes to get this done.

“It’s been an honour for me to represent the club in the role that I have done. It’s developed me as a player and as a person and I absolutely love the place to bits and the boys we’ve got here.

“I’m really excited for the Toronto game, they bring a lot of excitement and expectation with them, so I hope the fans will come down to support me and the rest of the boys, and see what Toronto are about.

“You could say a testimonial game is about that individual player but I don’t think so, I think it’s about the team and our preparations for the new year. We’re going to have a pretty strong side out for it and I know Daryl wants to play a side that he’s more than likely going to go with for round one.

“I think it will be a smallish squad for us against Toronto and they don’t have a huge squad either so it’s pretty much going to be a Super League standard game two weeks before the competition starts.

“I thought I’d start my testimonial year with my game and get the biggest event out of the way with early. After that, we’re going to plan a few things such as a golf day and a dinner towards the end of next season. It will be a few big events rather than lots of little ones as I don’t want it to be too much of a distraction, I want my focus to be on having a good season.”

Further details on Shenton’s additional testimonial events will be confirmed in due course, along with the unveiling of his testimonial shirt to be worn by the Tigers in the fixture against the Wolfpack.

Tickets for the game against Toronto are on sale now priced at £15 adults and £10 concessions when purchased in advance at our retail stores. Game day prices will be £16 and £11 respectively.
