Castleford Tigers Women secured a place in what will be their first ever Women’s Super League Grand Final following a 34-4 victory over Wigan Warriors.
The Tigresses will take on Leeds Rhinos in the showpiece on Friday night at the Totally Wicked Stadium. The game will be shown live on Sky Sports.
Tara Stanley was named Player of that Match during Sunday’s semi-final. The full back scored twice and kicked three conversions as the Tigresses confirmed their place in the Grand Final.
Despite the margin of victory, Wigan proved tough opposition; especially in the opening exchanges.
The defending champions put early pressure on the Tigresses and came close to opening the scoring. Rebecca Greenfield burst past Castleford’s defence and seemed to have crossed the whitewash. However, the try was ruled out for a knock on as pressure from Tara Stanley saw the Wigan full-back lose control of the ball.
After preventing a try in one end, Stanley then went on to score in the other. Castleford shifted the a ball out wide which saw the England international touch down in the corner to open the scoring.
With half an hour gone, the Tigresses pulled further ahead courtesy of Maisie Lumb. Once again, the home side shipped the ball down the right wing to Lumb who finished well in the corner.
Just a few minutes later, Stanley scored her second as she latched on to a kick from Georgia Roche. The full back then added the extras to give the home side a 14-0 lead.
Just as the game was beginning to get away from Wigan, the Warriors were rewarded for their efforts with a try. Rachel Thompson found Georgia Wilson out wide who then got the better of Kelsey Gentles and went over for the points.
Wigan started the second half in the same fashion they started the first – on the front foot.
The visitors almost scored their second try two minutes after the restart. Thompson produced a break but was eventually stopped in her tracks by an awaiting Tara Stanley.
Castleford extended their lead on the 52nd minute mark when Sinead Peach spotted a gap down the middle and exploited it with devastating effect.
Frankie Townend, Maisie Lumb and Tamzin Renouf then added more points for the Tigresses as the home side ran out 34-4 winners.
Castleford will now take on Leeds in the Grand Final. Kick off is 7.30pm down at the Totally Wicked Stadium in St. Helens. Fans interested in heading over on a coach can contact our ticket office on 01977 529 264.
