Tigresses can rekindle 2017 League Leaders Shield memories

After 12 rounds in the Women's Super League, it is Castleford Tigers who are sitting pretty at the top of the table. Lindsay Anfield's side have won every league fixture and they will lift the League Leaders Shield should they beat York City Knights Ladies.

This game will no doubt bring back a lot of memories from 2017 when it was Daryl Powell's side lifting the shield in front of a packed Mend-A-Hose Jungle.

In fact, there are a number of similarities between the men's 2017 season and the women's current campaign.

Firstly, both teams topped their tables. After the Super 8s, Powell's side were top of the rankings having won 25 of their 30 games that season. The women have been pretty ruthless themselves when it comes to the Women's Super League. Anfield's players have won all 12 of their games so far this season and currently sit three points clear at the top.

Secondly, both teams have been scoring machines! In 2017, Castleford Tigers racked up 965 points at the end of their 30 league games. Meanwhile, the women have so far managed to score a mind boggling total of 567 points.

In order to score so many points, a team needs clinical finishers. Back in 2017, Greg Eden ended the season as the top try scorer with 38 Super League tries to his name. Greg Minikin came fourth with 19. The women also have their fair share of top scorers.

In truth, four of the top six try scorers in the Woman's Super League all come from the Tigers (Tara Stanley 14, Georgia Roche 14, Kelsey Gentles 10 and Rhiannion Marshall 10).

You don't have to be a die-hard fan to know that the recipient of the 2017 Man of Steel award was our very own Luke Gale. Funnily enough, the women also have their own Woman of Steel nominee with Kelsey Gentles recently being named on the shortlist.

The 20-year-old has scored 21 tries in all competitions and could take the award from another Tigers player, the 2018 Woman of Steel Georgia Roche.

The main similarity is still to come. For most Tigers fans, 2017 was an unforgettable year due to the club winning the League Leaders Shield. The Tigresses will be hoping to bag that honour this Tuesday night at the Mend-A-Hose Jungle.

Make sure to join the women for a 7.30pm kick off and be a part of a historic game.

Entry is FREE for season ticket holders, £3 adults and £1 concessions.
