Under-19s fall to Vikings

Castleford Tigers U19s fell 34-24 to Widnes Vikings on Saturday afternoon, as their quest for a first league win of the season continued.
The Tigers’ right flank proved potent throughout the afternoon, with all five Castleford tries coming from that side. However, the hosts were ultimately outscored six-to-five by the Vikings, who ran out with the win and the all-important points.
The two sides were clearly evenly-matched in the first quarter. Josh Wilde opened the scoring for Widnes inside the first five minutes, but Castleford soon pegged the Vikings back via Robbie Storey, who benefitted from a really smart Jake Sweeting pass across the line.
However, for the remainder of the first half, the Vikings had the initiative, running in three tries through winger Joe Edge, Daniel Hill and Wilde, who bagged his second.
Hope was restored just before the break, as Joe Fella crashed over for the Tigers, but there was a mountain to climb in the second period – one that was ultimately too high for Castleford to summit.
After the interval, the Tigers looked the team most likely, but a lack of clinical edge in the final third of the field cost the hosts. Instead of clawing back the deficit, the black and amber only saw it extended after 50 minutes, as half-back Ben Davies evaded the attention of three defenders to touch down.
Castleford did come up with a superb response, scoring three tries in a ten-minute spell. However, the Tigers’ flourish came far too late in the piece, after a large spell of the game where neither side even looked like threatening the line.
Fella, scoring his second, Louis Collinson and Lewis Carr were the scorers at the death for the hosts – making the score line more respectable despite Widnes’ Jacob Dugdale also getting in on the act late on.
