Clare's ready to face the Wildcats

After an impressive 2014, James Clare is now a first team regular but knows only his hard work and dedication will keep him there in 2015.

Clare burst into the first team at the end of 2013 with a four try performance against Wakefield Wildcats. This season sees him take over the number two shirt, from the recently retired, Kirk Dixon.

The winger knows there is a line of players ready to take his place but is determined to give coach Daryl Powell no reason to drop him.

"One of the things Daryl does really well is manage the squad and he gives you opportunities at the right times and you've just got to take advantage of them when they come," he said.

"We've got a bigger squad that last year so the competition for places is massive, so you've got to be on the top of your game every week otherwise there will be someone there to take your shirt straight away.

"The hard work starts now in my eyes. The number will mean nothing if you don't train as hard as you can or perform on the day because someone is waiting to take that shirt straight away."

Unfortunately, Clare missed out on the squad for the Challenge Cup final in 2014 but has high hopes going into this season.

"Hopefully, we can kick on from last year and come away with some silverware. It was almost a little disappointing towards the end of last year," he added.

"We were the maybe team and ended up coming away with nothing after a season of hard work.

As a former academy player at Castleford, Clare had high praise for the most recent crop of young talent, which has moved up into the first team:

"With the structure we have got with Ryan Sheridan being the 19's coach, the lads know what is expected of them. They are able to come straight into place with the rest of the first team.

"They are doing absolutely brilliantly and the rest of the lads can not speak highly enough about the youth lads we've got here."

As the Tigers gear up for the new season, Clare and the rest of the team are working hard towards that first Super League clash against rivals Wakefield Wildcats.
